In Part 1 of Teen Facials we discussed the importance of a professional skincare treatment. But just as important is the homecare routine. If you don’t look after your skin at home, in between professional treatments, then you will not reap the full benefits of it. The focus for teenage and young adult skin is primarily surrounding breakouts. This is because of the imbalance of hormones during puberty. The skin can be oily and carry excessive bacteria. If you are not fully educated on your skins health, this can be a difficult time for you.
The reality is that some skincare brands can be too harsh for the skin they cater to, using ingredients such as artificial fragrances and colours that are counterproductive. They cause irritation and strip the oil form the skin leaving it dry and irritated. This can result in additional problems.
The best range that PURA would recommend would be Dermalogica's Clean Start range. Specifically created to cater to the needs of young skin, to target breakouts and reduce the effects of oil production. Clear Start is ideal, in that it unclogs pores, minimising the breakouts that can produce bacteria. It also helps to control oil.
Clear Start takes a four-level approach to clearing breakouts through combination therapy, combining the best of nature's botanicals and the science of breakout-clearing skin care. Through an easy-to-follow regimen that incorporate extra clearing products, Clear Start™ helps teens reveal their clearest level of skin and establish good skin care habits that will last a lifetime.
There are 8 products in the Clear Start range. If you are new to proper skincare and an 'at home routine', you might want to start with the basics. The first product would be the Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash. This amazing cleanser gets rid of dead skin cells, dirt and excess oil that can clog pores and produce further breakouts. Use morning and night.
After Cleansing it is important that you always make sure you moisturise. Try the Breakout Clearing daytime Treatment. This lightweight moisturiser is powerful at preventing breakouts before they happen.
For a more matte look, try the Oil Clearing Matte Moisturiser spf15. This product reduces oil and shine whilst hydrating. It has the added benefit of an spf that will protect your skin against UV rays, which are present all year round. In addition to the protecting against rays that cause premature ageing, these rays can also make your breakouts worse and create dark spots.
Finally, you must, must exfoliate. We recommend Blackhead Clearing Pore Control Scrub. This must have product cleans your pores, whilst removing dull, dead skin. It contains a purifying bentonite clay that will absorb excess oil and debris, aiding the control of shine. Use this product 2-3 times daily.
Helpful Tip! Leave this scrub on for about 5 to 10 minutes after exfoliating to act like a masque.
If you are a skincare fanatic and you know your sebum from your acne, then why not make full use of the rest of the range with confidence. This will get you the best results.
Remember it is never too early to start caring for your skin. Dermalogica’s Clear Start range can be used from as young as 8 years old.
